🚨 Luka Modric, has officially confirmed his departure from Real Madrid after 13 years, with his final La Liga match at the Santiago Bernabeu against Real Sociedad on Saturday, May 24, 2025.
Modric announced his exit via an emotional Instagram post, stating, “The time has come. The moment I never wanted to come, but that’s football, and in life everything has a beginning and an end.”
He expressed gratitude to club president Florentino Perez, teammates, coaches, and fans, highlighting his pride in being part of one of Real Madrid’s most successful eras, winning 28 trophies, including six Champions League titles and four La Liga crowns.
Modric, who joined from Tottenham Hotspur in 2012, will play his last games for the club at the FIFA Club World Cup in June–July 2025, after signing a temporary contract extension.
Despite his desire to stay and strong performances (two goals and six assists in 34 La Liga appearances this season), the club’s management, prioritizing a youthful midfield with players like Arda Guler and Nico Paz, decided against renewing his contract, a decision not driven by incoming manager Xabi Alonso.
Modric’s legacy includes 590 appearances, 43 goals, and the 2018 Ballon d’Or, making him Real Madrid’s most decorated player.
Tributes from teammates like Jude Bellingham, who wrote, “The only thing outweighing my sadness right now is the gratitude I feel for having had the honour of being your teammate,” and former captain Sergio Ramos, who called him one of the greatest, underscore his impact.
Offers from Saudi Arabia and the MLS have emerged, but Modric aims to maintain competitive fitness for Croatia’s 2026 World Cup campaign.
